Trying to keep your smartphone in tip-top condition for several years requires following basic care rules. There are simple maintenance tasks that we should all do, but honestly: who among us remembers them regularly in the hustle and bustle of everyday life? I myself try to follow several tips to extend the life of my Samsung, but doing them regularly is a problem for me due to my forgetfulness.

However, recently I have been in the superstructure One UI I discovered a "set it and forget it" feature that completely eliminated one of my most annoying maintenance tasks.

Device Care system app on phones Galaxy It contains a whole host of useful tools that help keep your system in great shape. It's a shame that it doesn't get the attention it deserves. One tool in particular is absolutely crucial - it solves something as seemingly trivial as regularly restarting your phone.

I used to think that restarting your phone was unnecessary unless there was a problem, but it's actually one of the most important things you can do to ensure your device lasts for years without any hiccups. Your phone's performance naturally degrades over time, but proper care can significantly slow down this process.

Regular restart offers several fundamental advantages:

  • Clearing temporary memory (RAM): It frees up system resources that were being blocked by inactive background applications.
  • Extending battery life: It stops processes that were secretly draining energy.
  • Minor bug fixes: It solves occasional crashes, animation crashes, or broken notifications.
  • Security aspect: Even the US National Security Agency (NSA) relies on regular reboots, which it includes in its recommendations. Regular reboots make it much more difficult for attackers to maintain access to your device through malicious code.

How to enable and configure automatic restart?

So that you don't have to think about restarting or manually pressing the button in the Device Care app, Samsung has built full automation into the system. Setup takes barely half a minute:

  • Go to Settings→Device Care→Auto Optimization.
  • Scroll down and tap on the option Automatic restart.

You now have two options:

  • Restart if necessary: The phone restarts itself when the system experiences a significant drop in performance or an error.
  • Restart as scheduled: You can choose the exact day and time when the restart will occur. This is the option I use and you should too.

My personal experience is that it is best not to wait for the system to start scrubbing. I myself set an automatic restart every Sunday at midnight. I have been using a regular automatic restart for some time now and it is the best thing I have done for my Galaxy A54 could do. The phone doesn't freeze as much and the battery life seems to have improved a bit. I would never believe how something so simple can benefit my aging device.
