Running demanding console games on mobile devices has been making huge strides lately. The team behind the ARMSX3 emulator for Android has released a series of quick updates in recent days that bring a number of key features, fixes, and significant performance optimizations to the app.

ARMSX3 has only recently appeared as the third emulator in the series PlayStation 3 for the Android platform. The developers have already earned a reputation for churning out updates at an incredible pace with their previous project ARMSX2, and they are continuing this trend with their latest effort.

Support for PKG packages and position saving

  • The new versions published on GitHub have brought major functional enhancements. The emulator can now handle game folders and packages in PKG format, including RAP licenses. Other new features include:
  • Fully functional saving and loading of game positions.
  • Support for game trophies.
  • ANGLE wr interface integrationappst.
  • Automatic removal of shader cache when uninstalling the game.
  • Fixed and functional pause during gameplay.
  • More reliable installation of console firmware on lower-performance devices.

The latest releases v0.7 and v0.7.2 also bring changes to audio and graphics. The default audio backend has been set to Oboe, the developers have fixed a bug with water rendering in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on select Snapdragon chipsets, and have made general optimizations for mobile graphics cards (GPUs).

Which games will you play already?

The growing compatibility is also evidenced by the list of titles that have been released. According to the developers, titles such as Armored Core: For Answer and Sonic The Hedgehog. According to them, the game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is in working order and the titles Saint Seiya: The Sanctuary, Sonic Unleashed and the God of War 3 demo are now at least successfully running.

Tests on real hardware (specifically on the AYANEO Pocket S handheld Mini) confirmed smooth gameplay in the title 1942 Joint Strike. However, the limits of mobile hardware are still evident in more demanding games - for example, UFC 2009 ran very slowly and Birds of Steel crashed before the gameplay even loaded.

Despite occasional limits, it's clear that PS3 emulation on Android is leaving the phase of fluid experimentation and, with each subsequent update, is becoming a realistically usable alternative for mobile gaming.
