Google is constantly adding new features to YouTube. They are usually based on AI and are aimed at making the platform easier for users to use. Many of us would rather see fewer ads than add unnecessary (and often unnecessary) features, but we probably won't see that. And now YouTube will offer another new feature - writing direct messages. The video platform is slowly becoming a kind of new social network.

You may remember that YouTube once had the ability to write messages. Google introduced it in 2017, but it apparently did not meet with much success, so in 2019 quietly withdrew again. But no one missed her much, prothe same with the platform pro sharing videos is a much more substantial option than writing comments. However, in mid-February, complaints emerged that some non-paying users YouTube using ad blockers can't even see the comments and they can't write them, so maybe big changes will happen in this area soon too.

YouTube social network

Writing messages on YouTube seemed dead for a long time proGoogle is not working for him. last November decided to give it a second chance. He launched the feature as experimental and made it available only to users in Poland and IrelandHe was waiting to see what the response would be, and apparently it was surprisingly good. Pronow he announcedthat direct messaging is expanding to other countries. This will make it available in total in 31 countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia

The US and Asia are out of luck

From Google's perspective, it's still about experimental function, proThis keeps it in Europe for now. There is no information yet about expanding to the USA, Japan, India or other Asian or African countries. And the possibilities are still strictly limited.

Function pro sending messages is intended only pro users over 18 years old. This means that YouTube either estimate their age based on their history, or want them proclick on a selfie or send a copy of your ID. Younger people have this feature disabled for security reasons so that no dubious existences can write to them.

Another condition is that text messages or video links You can only send from YouTube to friends you invite to the conversation. As long as your they will not accept the invitation, you can't contact them. Of course, they must have their YouTube account and must be logged in to it, messages will not work in guest mode.

This is an interesting improvement that, like the news in Spotify will allow you to communicate with friends without having to jump from app to app. However, I'm afraid that over time Google may decide that this is an exclusive feature and lock it behind a payment gateway. Fortunately, this is not the case yet and you can try out whether texting via YouTube will suit you.
