MWC in Barcelona is traditionally the place where tech giants show off what's in store for us in the coming years. This year, Samsung Display's division caught the eye, showcasing several fascinating concepts, led by rollable and slide-out displays. Forget the usual jigsaw puzzles - the future belongs to panels that change size with smooth movement.

One of the most interesting proThe Slidable Flex Vertical is one of them. At first glance, it looks like a very compact phone with a diagonal of only 5,1 inches. However, with one movement, the display slides vertically upwards, increasing the area to a standard 6,7 inches. The aspect ratio is adjusted from 16:9 to 22:9 with a stated resolution of 1,080 x 2,640 FHD+ and a density of pixel426 ppi.

This concept solves the eternal proThe problem with modern smartphones: How to have a large display pro content viewing, but at the same time a device that you can hardly feel in your pocket. Unlike the series Galaxy Z Flip Moreover, there is no visible hinge or bend when unfolded.

ProWhat do you want?

Rollable technology offersprothose of today's flexible phones (foldables) several advantages:

  • No visible bend: The panel does not roll over a sharp angle, so the surface remains perfectly flat.
  • Variability: The user can choose exactly the level of protrusion they need.
  • Thickness: In the future, slide-out mechanisms may be thinner than designs with two halves connected by a hinge.

When will we see it in practice?

It is important to remember that these innovations are presented by Samsung Display, not the mobile division of Samsung Electronics. This is a demonstration of technological possibilities. Although proWhile the models at MWC looked very functional and polished, we'll probably have to wait another year or two for the first commercially available phone with the company's logo. Developing software that would adapt to such a dynamic surface and ensuring durability prothose of dust in the mechanism are still big challenges.

But one thing is certain - the era of boring black phones is finally coming to an end, and Samsung has aces up its sleeve that can put the mobile market back on its feet.
