As you probably know, Android Auto is set to launch sooner or later with several major functionsLate last year, Google began rolling out Assistant to it. Gemini and now it seems that the Radio Control feature is one step closer to being made available, which we first heard about the year before last.

Android Authority website proled a teardown of the latest version of the Android Auto app and discovered strings of code in it, which refer to the radio station search feature. This feature could allow passengers to search for and tune in to their favorite channels directly in Android Auto, rather than prothrough tuners in the car.

No need for third-party apps anymore

This finding is complemented by an image of HD Radio that the site discovered in one of its previous Android Auto teardowns. HD Radio is essentially a digital mirror of existing analog stations used mostly in the US and Canada. The technology is currently supported by millions of vehicles from various manufacturers.

The strings also mention a "Radio Tab," which could be a tab that will serve as a hub pro Android Auto radio features. However, it is unclear at this time how such a card would be presented to users.

It's worth noting that Android Auto has previously allowed passengers to access radio apps provia the Play Store, filling the gap between analog radio and the platform's lack of native digital radio support. However, with digital radio support apparently coming to Android Auto soon, third-party apps will no longer be needed.

Radio control as part of a broader strategy

The radio control feature is part of a broader Google strategy called Car Media. The goal is to make Android Auto a comprehensive ecosystem that will not just mirror your phone, but a true center of your dashboard. The American giant is also working on better management of local media, such as music stored on USB drives connected to the car.
