When you think of a portable power station, most people imagine a device that is ideal for camping, working in the field or as a backup source in case of a power outage. But what if you decide to go somewhere where the temperature drops well below zero? Where conventional lithium cells stop working, there is a novelty that literally rejoices in the cold. BLUETTI Pioneer Na is the world's first portable charging station using sodium cells, and as the name suggests, it is a true pioneer in the field of portable energy. I had it in an editorial test for a week and honestly, few devices have surprised me as much recently as this inconspicuous but extremely capable station.

Technical specifications, processing and design

At first glance, the Pioneer Na looks like another of the portable power stations we know from BLUETTI. The robust body made of a combination of fire-resistant PC+ABS plastic suggests that this device can handle even more demanding treatment. BLUETTI boasts that the design has been tested to withstand drops from a height of up to 1,2 meters, which is half as much as required by common industry standards.

The dimensions are 340 × 247 × 317 mm and the weight is 16 kilograms, so even if you don't take it in a backpack, it is relatively comfortable to carry thanks to the well-shaped handle. Whether you are carrying it from the car to the workshop or from chaty for the garden, the feeling of honest workmanship is simply palpable.

BLUETTI certainly didn't skimp on the port equipment. On the front you'll find two AC outputs (1,500 W / 2,250 W peak), four USB-A ports (15 W), one powerful USB-C PD 3.0 port (100 W), a 12V cigarette lighter outlet (120 W) and a wireless charging pad (15 W) located on top, which works great with Qi devices, including iPhones. There are also DC outputs, a solar charging port (12–60 V, max. 500 W) and of course Bluetooth for connection to the BLUETTI mobile application.

Everything is complemented by a clear display with bright backlight, which shows not only the current input and output power, but also the temperature, the status of individual battery modules and an accurate estimate of the remaining operating time. The entire system is controlled by an intelligent BMS called BLUETOPUS AI-BMS, which monitors voltage, current, temperature and protects the station from overcharging, short circuit or overheating.

Inside is a 900 Wh sodium battery with a lifespan of over 4,000 cycles, meaning that even with daily use, the device can easily last for over 10 years. What's more, sodium cells don't use any precious metals, making them a more environmentally friendly and sustainable solution than traditional lithium batteries.

Testing

When Pioneer Na arrived in my office, I decided not to give it anything for free. I plugged everything I could into it – MacBook Air M3, router, TV, LED lamp, small coffee maker with 300W power, and even a small 450W fan heater to see how it would handle higher loads. The station handled everything with complete clarity. With a laptop and other small items connected, the output was around 100-150W, which meant that I could easily get through a full working day without an outlet on a single charge. In fact, I could easily get through a week, which is absolutely incredible. 

When I then connected it to the heater and coffee maker, the power indicator jumped to 1,200 W, but even then the Pioneer Na didn't break a sweat. Its fans did start up slowly (without any annoying noise, of course) and the output voltage remained stable. But what is crucial is that everything happened completely silently, without any fluctuations in power or interruptions in the power supply. Of course, the power supply to your electronics is always on - so you don't have to worry, for example, that as soon as you plug another appliance into one of the free ports, all the others will lose power for a while, only to then "start up" again. 

I also tried what makes the most sense for this station – charging from a solar panel. I used a 200W BLUETTI solar panel, and even though it is autumn and the sun is definitely not as strong as in summer, I got a real input of around 150W. That is a great result for this time of year. So I believe that in summer, with full sunlight, it would not be a problem to get close to maxThe minimum 500 W that the station can handle from the solar input. And of course if I had a solar panel that allows these W. 

In combination with AC + solar charging, the Pioneer Na can use up to 1,900 W and charge from zero to 80% in just 35 minutes, which I verified in practice, when after less than half an hour in the socket the display showed 78%, which corresponds to the manufacturer's data.

And then came the test that interested me the most – behavior in the cold. BLUETTI promises that the Pioneer Na can charge down to -15 °C and discharge down to -25 °C. That's why I left it overnight in a freezer set to -18 °C. In the morning, I turned on the station and without a single hesitation, it not only started MacBook even a connected heater, but what's more, its charge level didn't drop even a percent! Where most lithium-ion stations would refuse to cooperate, the Pioneer Na worked as if it were at normal temperatures.

The station also has extremely low standby power consumption, specifically just 1,5 W. If you leave only the DC output turned on, the consumption rises to 3,8 W, with the AC output turned on to 9 W, and with a combination of both circuits to around 10 W. This means that if you only use it occasionally, it will remain ready for immediate use even after several weeks.

From the point of view of user comfort, I was pleasantly surprised by the speed of switching between sources. BLUETTI itself states less than 20 milliseconds, which has been confirmed in practice. When switching from mains power to battery power, no device disconnected, nor did the router lose signal. This makes it a great backup source for home or office.

As a lover of mobile phones and apps, I was also quite pleased with the ability to manage via phone. Thanks to the BLUETTI app, I was able to control the station remotely from my iPhone via Bluetooth with the app allowing you to monitor precise performance, activate Power Lifting Mode, change charging modes or even update firmware. And even though the connection is only via Bluetooth (without Wi-Fi), works stably and quickly.

As for noise, even when maxAt minimum load, the Pioneer Na is noticeably quieter than other BLUETTI models that I have had the opportunity to test. The fans start with discretion, and if you use the station at night in a motorhome, they will not disturb you. And what is important – they work really reliably. When I charged the station, it had absolutely no tendency to heat up any more. So the fans do their job perfectly. 

As part of the test, I also tried wireless charging of the phone, which worked reliably. Thanks to this, charging was stable and the output power of around 10-12 W was completely sufficient in practice.

Overall, I can say that the Pioneer Na feels incredibly “sure” in operation. Throughout the entire testing period, there were no reboots, error messages, or overheating – in short, a device that feels like you can rely on it.

Summary

BLUETTI Pioneer Na is not just another portable power station. It is real proof that sodium technology has a huge future in the field of portable energy sources. Compared to classic lithium stations, it offers several fundamental advantages: it works even in frost, has a longer lifespan, a lower ecological footprint and is significantly safer.

After a week of use, I would recommend it without hesitation to anyone who needs a reliable and powerful power source - whether for work outside the network, for a caravan, camping, cottage or as a backup solution for the home. In combination with a quality solar panel, it can create a full-fledged system for independent operation on electricity, even in winter. Yes, the weight of 16 kilograms is no longer completely "portable" in the sense of a backpack, but considering the performance, charging speed, safety features and durability, it is an excellent compromise between mobility and capacity.

Pioneer Na thus fully deserves its name – it is a true pioneer among portable stations, not afraid of winter, work or long journeys. And above all, it is the first station that you feel will serve you for a decade.
