One of the most popular cases for smartphones is the transparent ones. The reason is simple – they protect your phone without obscuring its design and color. However, most of them have a certain disadvantage, namely that they turn yellow over time. Depending on the make and model of your case, it may develop yellow spots or completely turn yellow over time. A number of factors contribute to this process, but luckily there is a way to slow it down or "clean up" the yellow tint once it forms on the case.

Factors contributing to the yellowing of clear cases

The materials used to make clear cases play a big role in the color conversion, and some are more resistant to this process than others. Cheap, soft silicone cases tend to degrade faster and often turn yellow completely. Here are some factors that contribute to the yellowing process.

Ultrapurple light

UltraThe ultraviolet (UV) light that comes into contact with your clear case when it is exposed to sunlight is one of the biggest factors in causing the case to turn yellow. UV light causes a chemical reaction that enhances the yellow color. Exposing your phone to sunlight less often will help slow down the degradation of the case, but for obvious reasons, it cannot be avoided completely.

warm

Yellowing of the transparent case is also accelerated by its exposure to heat sources other than sunlight. It can also be the phone itself. If it's hot (like after a long gaming session), it's a good idea to remove the case from it before it cools down. Another source of heat can be your hand when holding the phone, so be aware of that.

Natural oils from skin, sweat and grease

Natural oils from your body (typically from your hands and face) that come into contact with the case also contribute to the yellowing process. Sweaty and greasy palms can also worsen the situation. Looking at all the contributing factors, it is possible to state that you can only influence the yellowing of the case to a certain extent. Now you may be wondering what to do if it is already yellow.

Methods of cleaning a yellowed transparent case

Fortunately, there are ways to clean an already yellowed case, although of course not completely.

Isopropanol

One way to partially clean a yellowed transparent case is to use isopropanol. Adding a small amount to a paper towel or cleaning cloth will help you get rid of some of the sweat and grease from the surface of the case.

Dish soap

If you don't have isopropanol on hand, use dish soap to make a warm soapy solution with a little dish soap and water and scrub the case gently. You can use a toothbrush to clean the corners.

Baking soda

You can also try sprinkling the case with a little baking soda and then gently scrubbing it with a damp toothbrush. You can use toothpaste instead of baking soda, but baking soda is more effective. As we indicated above, there are no ways to completely clean a yellowed transparent case. Those described above can only remove oil, sweat and grease, but the yellow tint caused mainly by UV light is practically irreversible.

If you absolutely must have a transparent case on your phone, we recommend getting a solid one made of polycarbonate material. Although these cases tend to be more expensive, they are more resistant to the yellowing process than cheaper cases made of materials such as silicone or acrylic, and will therefore last longer. One of the brands that offer such more durable cases are Supcase and Tech-Protect, and especially PanzerGlass, whose products are also available here for a wide range of phones. You can also read reviews on many of them here, and we can truly confirm that these are some of the best covers ever.
